Safe, respectful and inclusive learning environments
Global Teacher is committed to providing safe, respectful and inclusive environments for children participating in or coming into contact with our programs. For the purposes of our policy, a child is any person under 18 years of age.
We have zero tolerance for child exploitation, abuse and harm, and for inaction in preventing, reporting or responding to safeguarding concerns.

Child protection is built into how Global Teacher plans and delivers every program. Global Teacher:
- prioritises the safety, rights, dignity, wellbeing and best interests of children;
- applies a child-safe and "do no harm" approach;
- incorporates safeguarding into program planning, participant selection, preparation and delivery;
- requires immediate reporting of safeguarding concerns;
- works with partner schools and organisations to clarify supervision, reporting and safeguarding responsibilities;
- reviews safeguarding risks and procedures regularly.
Who This Applies To
Our Child Protection & Safeguarding Policy applies wherever a Global Teacher activity involves direct or indirect contact with children, including:
- Global Teacher directors, staff and contractors;
- participating teachers and team leaders;
- volunteers, where applicable;
- partner personnel involved in child-related activities;
- school-based programs;
- online/virtual classroom collaboration;
- cultural and educational activities involving children;
- photography, video and digital communication involving children.
Key Safeguards
A few of the practical safeguards that sit at the centre of our approach:
Registered Teachers & Screening
Australian participants working directly with children must be currently registered teachers in an Australian state or territory. Global Teacher verifies current teacher registration and relevant child-safety screening requirements.
Host-School Supervision
Australian teachers do not assume supervision or duty of care for host-school students. Students remain under the supervision and safeguarding arrangements of their regular school or responsible organisation.
No Private Student Contact
Student-related communication occurs through teacher- and school-approved channels. Personal phone numbers, private email addresses, social-media details, home addresses or other unnecessary personal contact information are not exchanged.
Photos, Video & Student Information
Images, recordings and student work are only shared or published where appropriate school and parent/guardian approval has been obtained.
Child-Safe Program Design
Global Teacher undertakes child-protection risk assessment for programs involving work or contact with children, and incorporates appropriate mitigation measures into planning.
Code of Conduct
Relevant participants must read the Child Protection & Safeguarding Policy and agree to the Global Teacher Child Protection Code of Conduct before participating in child-related activities.
Reporting a Safeguarding Concern
Any concern, suspicion, allegation, disclosure or observed behaviour that may involve child exploitation, abuse, harm or inappropriate conduct connected with a Global Teacher activity should be reported immediately.
Children participating through a partner school may also raise concerns with their regular teacher or another trusted school safeguarding contact.
Global Teacher will work with the relevant school/partner and appropriate authorities to respond to concerns and protect the safety, privacy and wellbeing of affected children.
For DFAT-funded activities, relevant incidents are reported to DFAT in accordance with mandatory reporting requirements.
Our Child Protection Code of Conduct
Relevant Global Teacher participants — including teachers and team leaders taking part in child-related activities — agree to a Child Protection Code of Conduct before they participate. The Code covers:
- professional boundaries
- appropriate communication
- privacy
- photography and media
- prohibition of sexualised, exploitative, abusive or grooming behaviour
- avoidance of isolated one-to-one contact where unnecessary
- immediate reporting of concerns
